Export your Movie Magic schedule to Excel, then import the scenes

SetHero can't open Movie Magic Scheduling files directly. Instead, use our Movie Magic to Excel exporter to turn your schedule into an Excel file, then import that file into your SetHero project.

The exporter is a separate tool, so you don't need a SetHero account to use it. You can download a free sample with the first 10 rows. The full file costs $10 for one conversion or $35 a year for unlimited conversions. MMS to Excel exporter billing covers payments, renewals, and cancelling.

Export your schedule from Movie Magic

You'll need Movie Magic Scheduling open on your computer. This video walks through each step:

  1. Open the exporter and download the .msr report template.
  2. In Movie Magic, open the project you want to export. Go to the Design menu and select Report Layouts. Make sure you choose Report Layouts, not Strip Layouts.
  3. In the toolbar, click Import Report Layouts, select the .msr file you downloaded, and click Import.
  4. Double-click the imported template's name to open the report designer.
  5. Click the Print Preview icon at the top left, and move the view scale slider to 80%.
  6. Click the Print icon. When asked to choose a printer, select Save as PDF and save the file. This looks slightly different on Windows and Mac.

Convert the PDF to Excel

  1. Go back to the exporter and upload the PDF you just saved.
  2. Click Begin Conversion.
  3. Enter your email address and choose a payment option, or download the free sample.

The Excel file includes your scene breakdown data, such as sheet and strip numbers, shoot dates and days, script pages, and cast IDs. Any custom categories you use in Movie Magic appear as extra columns that start with ADDED:.

Import the Excel file into SetHero

  1. From the project dashboard, find Add scenes and open the Import dropdown.
  2. Select CSV / Excel.
  3. Drag in your Excel file, then match its columns to the SetHero fields.
  4. Click Approve and Import.

Fix conversion errors

If the exporter shows an error, here's what to try:

File is too largeThe PDF must be 7 MB or smaller.
Upload failedCheck your internet connection and try again.
Conversion failedTry again. If it fails a second time, watch the troubleshooting video below, then email support@sethero.com and attach your PDF.

Tip: If your conversion keeps failing, check that you set the preview to 80% and chose Report Layouts rather than Strip Layouts.
